How to ask for the bill in German
Catch the server’s eye and say “Die Rechnung, bitte” or “Könnten wir bitte zahlen?”. They’ll often ask “Zusammen oder getrennt?”: paying separately is normal, so say “Wir möchten getrennt zahlen”. Tip by telling the server the total you want to pay, such as “Machen Sie vierzehn”.
Try it · about two minutes
At the end of a meal with friends you ask for the bill, decide how to split it and whether to leave a tip.
Sound on: the server speaks German. You choose what to say back, and Frasa tells you why it works.

How paying works
- 1
Catch the server’s eye and ask: the bill doesn’t come on its own.
Could we pay, please? - 2
The server asks whether you’re paying together or separately, then works out each share at the table.
- 3
Each person pays at the table, saying the total they want to give, tip included.
Tip by saying the total
Service is included in the prices, and many people round up or add a little extra. Say the new total before you pay, rather than leaving coins on the table.

Make it fourteen.
Check before you order
Some smaller restaurants and cafés still take cash only. If you’re not sure, ask when you sit down.
Kann ich mit Karte zahlen?
Can I pay by card?
