How to return something in a shop in German
Take the item and receipt to the till and say “Ich möchte das zurückgeben” or “Kann ich es umtauschen?”. Explain what’s wrong: “Es ist zu klein”. The assistant will ask “Haben Sie den Kassenbon dabei?” and “Möchten Sie Ihr Geld zurück oder einen Umtausch?”. Some shops only offer a voucher.
Try it · about two minutes
You take back a jumper that doesn’t fit and ask for an exchange or your money back.
Sound on: the shop assistant speaks German. You choose what to say back, and Frasa tells you why it works.

How a return usually goes
- 1
Bring the item, unworn and with its tags, plus the receipt.
- 2
At the till, say what’s wrong and what you’d like.
- 3
Choose an exchange, a voucher (Gutschein) or, where the shop offers it, your money back.
Ask before you buy
For things bought in a shop, returns are often a goodwill policy, and each shop sets its own. Many chains take items back within a few weeks; some only exchange or give a voucher.
Wie lange kann ich es zurückgeben?
How long do I have to return it?
Ask, don’t demand

Both are correct, but a question sounds friendlier and tends to get a friendlier answer.
